Sunday, March 4th 2012: Three way charity match on the river Avon at Barford.

This is for representatives of the Birmingham, Oxford and Shakespeare regions. Each angler pays £15 to fish, of which £3 will go to the Barford Club and the remainder will be divided equally between two very worthy cancer charities, the MacMillan Nurses and Cancer Research. There are 45 fishable pegs available so the hope is to have 15 members from each of the three regions. Prizes have already been offered by Pike & Predator Magazine. Joseph Arch pub in Barford can do baguettes afterwards - details of arrangements and location maps below.

Fishery Rules
No braided lines allowed - please load up with monofil before fishing.
Lures and all deadbaits are allowed, plus livebaits if caught at the venue on the day.

Timings
7.00 Gate opened. Please have your £15 ready as you enter. Correct change please.

7.30 Draw for pegs by the boathouse.

8.00 Gate locked. The club insists that we keep the gate locked when it is unattended. Latecomers please ring 07800 931783 to be let in. It may take a while.

5.00 Cease fishing. Prizes shortly afterwards at boathouse. Then move on to Joseph Arch pub.

General
The prizes are not enormous, so we simply trust anglers to record their own aggregate weights of pike and/or zander correctly. So far the prizes are a subscription to Pike & Predator Magazine, 2 books, and a further prize kindly promised by Bailey's tackle in Warwick.

Can you please let me know if you are coming by 6.00 p.m. on the evening of Thursday 1st March. Please be sure to let me know if you would like a baguette at the pub, as we need to ring them for them to buy in the right amount of meat/baguettes.

Orchid Lakes Fish-In

Our latest fish-in was at Orchid Lakes, Dorchester-on-Thames on Monday 30th January. A total of 22 anglers attended the event and enjoyed a great day under the guidance of owner Marsh Pratley and his bailiffs. The renowned carp fishery receives very little attention in the way of pike fishing and despite the cold and bright weather the fishing lived up to expectations with 60 pike being caught, the biggest being a superb 21lb which fell mid morning to Mick Woods on ledgered herring. There was also a welcome and surprise capture of a 21lb 7oz mirror carp which took a liking to Rob Orton’s dead bait!
Most anglers caught a number of pike during the day with ten of the pike being double figures, the rest were jacks.

Meetings
Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 26 January at 7.30pm in the Red Lion pub in Eynsham. Guest speaker is piking legend Neville Fickling with his talk on 'Big Pike'. If anybody requires any deadbaits or items of tackle then call his shop (01427 613002) and save yourself any delivery or postage costs as Neville will bring them down on the night.

Our final meeting of the season takes place on Thursday 19 April which is trophy night. Unfortunately Joe Taylor will now be out of the country but I am pleased to advise that Mark Tyrtania has secured Dilip Sarkar MBE as our guest speaker. Dilip Sarkar was an original member of the Pike Anglers' Club of Great Britain, aged just 16, in 1977. A year later he succeeded Des Taylor as Regional Organiser for Worcestershire and has caught big pike from both the Severn and Wye, more recently he has set up the East Diglis Predator Syndicate & Partnership. Well-known for his huge enthusiasm for life and everything he does, Dilip is also the author of 30 books featuring the Spitfire aircraft and the Battle of Britain, for this effort he was made an MBE in 2003. His wife Karen, a renowned angling artist will also have a stand of her artwork on the night.

All meetings are pay on the door. £4 PAC members and £5 non PAC members. All welcome.

I have had some region mugs made and these will be on sale on at the meetings. I have only had ten made to start with and you can buy them for £5 each. I will also take orders for T-Shirts at £10 and Hoodies at £20 if anybody wants one. Each sale will generate a small profit which goes back into the regional funds to help pay for guest speakers and trophies etc.

Sun 19 Feb 12 - Blenheim Palace: I will require payment by 10 Feb, cost is £25 per boat (£12.50 per angler). Full details once you have booked and paid.

Seasons Greetings

Our last fish-in saw 12 anglers on the river Thames at Wolvercote, with the level so low the fishing proved very slow going with just one pike being caught, 6lb and falling to assistant RO Mark Tyrtania, successful tactic was arrive an hour late, chuck out a herring, go to sleep on the bank, wake up and catch a fish. Easy!

It was good to see a couple of new faces and friendships made and despite the slow fishing and early morning rowers I believe everyone enjoyed the day.

Orchid Lake Fish-In
There is only a couple of places left for this exclusive event which takes place on Monday 30th January 2012. The lake is 17.5 acres and owner Marsh Pratley does not allow pike fishing at this renowned carp water although it is known to contain a good number of pike up to specimen sizes. Many people have asked to pike fish this water, the answer usually being a No so this really is a great opportunity. £20 for 3 rods, full details from myself, if you wish to attend please book with myself by Friday 6th January 2012.

December 2011 Events

Great to see such a good turn out at our last meeting on 24 November 2011, apologies again for the small 'heated' room but I'm sure you will agree Nick Peat is quite a character with an incredible amount of big pike to his name, a most worthwhile guest speaker.

Just a quick update on our next two events:

Fish-In
Our next fish-in takes place on Sunday 11 December and will be held at the Port Meadow stretch of the river Thames (near Wolvercote). Cost will be £5 per person as the stretch has been booked via the ODAA. Meeting point and timings will be provided once you book your place. Please book through me by Friday 9 December.

Curry Night
This will take place on Saturday 17 December in Oxford. Venue is Chutneys Indian, 36 St Michael's Street, Oxford, OX1 2EB. I have made our booking for 7.30pm. For those that wish to have a drink first we will meet in the Weatherspoons 'Four Candles' pub in George street, just down from and opposite Oxford New Theatre from 6.30pm. Wife's and partners are also invited. Please let me know if you are attending by Monday 12 December so I can confirm numbers with the restaurant.

Fish-In Review and Next Meeting

11 anglers attended the fish-in on Sunday 30th October 2011 which was held at Linear Fisheries Brasenose 1. This was our second fish-in at this very under pike fished 32 acre gravel pit. In good conditions the anglers which included two very keen juniors, Jacob Orton and Ryan Styles, fished the far bank, the one opposite from the year before and we were all hopefull of seeing a few more then the one pike which was caught last year.

The first fish of the day was a 1lb pike caught by young Jacob on a float fished dead roach and we were impressed by his confident handling of the little Esox. Vince Williams was then fortunate enough to have a very confident run on a free-lined mackerel tail and after a decent fight a 10lb 8oz pike was duly netted. Soon after and Jacob had another jack of 2lb before things went really quiet and the only other fish was a 3lb'r which fell to a lure cast by Olly Mace. Despite the lack of action for most anglers an enjoyable day was had by all.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 24 November 2011 when Nick Peat who earlier this year caught his 300th 20lb plus pike is our guest speaker. Nick has also netted 10 x 30lb pike! Nick fishes a wealth of different waters, mainly enjoying the rivers of England, often travelling some distances to achieve his goals. Interestingly though, he catches nearly all the time on the bank, using deadbaits. Guaranteed to be a corking talk as Nick is a very dedicated and single minded angler and this is one not to miss. With the great river Thames running through our region I am sure we will all learn a lot and pick up some excellent tips. We gurantee Nick Peat will inspire you and your river piking. Fish-In on Sunday 30 Oct 2011

I am now taking names for those who want to attend our first fish-in of the season. This takes place on Brasenose 1, Linear Fisheries on Sunday 30 October 2011. Price is £15 for 2 rods, £21 for 3 rods. This 32 acre reed fringed pit is better known for its carp fishing and has received very little pike fishing, it has however produced a number of doubles and its first 20 in the last twelve months and has the potential to throw up bigger fish.

Predator Day at Tackle Up

Although not in our region, we are pleased to advertise and support Predator Day at Tackle Up in Fleet, Hampshire GU51 3PD which takes place on Saturday 8 October 2011.

Come and meet the top predator specialists from Savage gear with demonstrations of lures, advice and guidance on how to catch predatory fish; pike, zander and perch. In the afternoon they plan to have some fishing demos on the canal to see techniques in action.

In addition, on Saturday 19 November 2011 River Monsters presenter and big fish expert Jeremy Wade is at Tackle Up.

Former PAC Committee member and long-serving RO Phil Kirk from Derbyshire is our guest speaker and will be giving a talk on his piking exploits. Following his 30 last season this will be an entertaining talk and is sure to wet the apetite ahead of this winters pike fishing.

Trip To PAC Convention - Saturday 1st October 2011

As you know we are taking a mini-bus to this year’s event which is being held in Kettering and there will be a number of pick up points around the Oxfordshire area. There are now a limited number of spaces available, price for the mini-bus is £10.

We will be having more meetings and fish-ins from September 2011 through to April 2012. Details of dates, speakers and fish-ins will be posted on here in due course.

Next Meeting
Our final meeting of 2010-11 season takes place on Thursday 21 April, 7.30pm at the usual venue, the Red Lion, Eynsham. Guest speaker will be Phil Wakeford who will be delivering his talk 'A Life of Pike'. Phil is our Regional Liaison Officer and is Reading based. We will also have a raffle.

PAC Convention
We will be running a mini bus to the annual PAC convention at Kettering on 1 October 2011. Cost of the mini bus will be £10 per person and we will need at least 8 people to make it viable. Bookings are now being taken, payment confirms your place on a first come first served basis (max 14). Admission to the PAC convention is £10 PAC member), £15 (non-members). Accompanied juniors free.

Assistant Regional Organiser
I am delighted to advise that Mark Tyrtania has agreed to become our new Assistant Regional Organiser. Mark T as he is better known has much experience having been RO at the old Hitchin Region for nearly 10 years. Mark also assisted in organising and running the PAC convention a couple of times many years ago. Mark has been a regular at our meetings this season and I am sure will be a great asset in the running and development of the region.

Meetings
Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 24 March 2011 at the usual venue (The Red Lion, Eynsham, OX29 4HW ) starting at 7.30pm. We do not have a guest speaker so we will meet in the main bar and just have a chat and a beer. Everyone is invited to bring their photo albums along.

Our final meeting of the season will take place on Thursday 21 April and this is trophy night when trophies for biggest still water and river pike will be presented. Guest speaker will be Phil Wakeford who will be delivering his talk 'A Life of Pike'. Phil is our Regional Liaison Officer and is Reading based.

Catch Reports
Congratulations go to Eamonn Deeley who after 25 years of trying to break the 30 barrier has done so with a 32lb 3oz beauty from an Oxfordshire gravel pit (picture on gallery), this is currently the biggest stillwater Pike this season and with the 14th March just around the corner it will take some beating.
Tony Hallatt has had a 27lb 1oz specimen from the same pit that gave him a 25lb 7oz specimen earlier this season.
Mike Donovan leads the way with the biggest river pike having had two both weighing in at 19lb 8oz.
If you have caught bigger then these weights then please let me know. Any fish caught after 14 March will be entered into next season's competition.

Fish-In
The Regions second fish-in was held on Sunday 27 February 2011 and aboard six boats on Blenheim Palace the 12 anglers had a wet, hard but enjoyable day, only a handful of pike were caught the biggest coming to Mick Woods mate Andy who made the trip from Weston Super Mare, the fish going 18lb 1oz, all other fish were small jacks.

Due to his guiding commitments David Wolsoncroft-Dodds has decided to step down as Assistant RO, I would like to thank David for his support in setting the region up. Needless to say I am now looking for a new Assistant RO so if anyone is interested (I know a couple of you have expressed an interest) then please let me know.

Next Meeting
Takes place on Thursday 24 February 2011 at the usual venue (The Red Lion, Eynsham) starting at 7.30pm and we welcome guest speaker Jon Neafcy for his talk entitled 'stepping stones' it is in two halfs, firstly covering Jon's apprenticeship as a piker of over 30 years & there are hightlights from childhood - first pike - first twenty - first 25 etc. Following the break and raffle the 2nd half is Jon's recent years & a whilstle-stop tour of where to catch pike (England, Scotland etc).

Jon Neafcy is a Wigan piker and Regional Organiser for PAC Region 31 (South Lancashire) and was the PAC Regional Organiser of the Year 2010, is a qualified angling coach & angling author in Pike & Predators magazine, Ecox eccose, pikelines, has a chapter in PAC 30 book. Jon was also guest speaker at PAAS 2008 conference, is captor of pike to 35.01 and is a newly appointed consultant for baitbox/pikepro.

Myself and Jon will be fishing the following day (Friday 25 February) if anyone is interested in joining us then please let me know.

Next Fish-In
Takes place at Blenheim Palace on Sunday 27 February 2011. Timings and meet details will be given when you book, all dead baits and lures can be used but no live baits can be brought onto the site under any circumstances. Well done to Tony Hallatt who today caught a cracking 25.07 specimen from an Oxfordshire Lake, the regions biggest pike so far this season. This was Tony's first outing for a while as he has been unwell. The fish was caught on a floatfished herring late morning and photo's will be on our gallery in due course. Don't forget there are trophies for the biggest stillwater and river pike caught this season.

The Regions first ever fish-in was held on Sunday 16 January 2011 and six anglers had an enjoyable day at Brasenose 1, Linear. The fishing was slow with just one fish caught whch weighed 10.12 and was caught by Clive Bristow. The 32 acre pit is well worth another go.

I am looking into running a mini bus to the annual PAC convention at Kettering Convention Centre where many Top pikers will be sharing some of the secrets of their success at Britain's top event for predator anglers. The event takes place on Saturday 01 October 2011. As usual, there will be a host of stalls selling the widest range of pike fishing tackle you can find under one roof - whether you want a packet of hooks, the latest lure rod or even a boat. You can stock up for the season, try out rods and other gear and hunt for bargains on our second-hand tackle and lure stalls. As usual, there will be a few authors launching their latest books. Admission £10 (PAC member), £15 (non-members). Accompanied juniors FREE. More details on the mini bus to follow.

How to Catch Bigger Pike

Oxford based Paul Gustafson has ten limited edition How to Catch Bigger Pike books left which you may be interested in.

They are magnificent books and are bound in green goatskin leather, coupled with gold leaf lettering. The books are a limited edition and are all numbered and signed by Paul.

Fred Buller did the foreword for the books, and there are chapters on fly fishing for pike by Bob Church along with chapters on Swedish pike fishing. Gord Burton has written chapters on lure fishing and fishing big waters for pike.

The books are £90 each with £8 for special delivery for postage. This is a saving of £50 as they normally retail for £140. If any of you want a copy please let me know and they will be posted once cheque is received.

Neville Fickling Talk Postponed

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond his control Neville Fickling has had to postpone his talk on 16 December.

As it’s so near Christmas and with the current bad weather I have decided to postpone the meeting and have re-arranged things a little. Timetable for events is now as follows:

Neville Fickling

It was great to see such a good turnout (31) at our last meeting, which included a few from the neighbouring Reading group. We all enjoyed an entertaining talk from Eddie Turner who is certainly one of the sports true characters and deserves all the big fish he catches.

Neville Fickling is editor of the country’s leading pike publication, tackle shop owner and has held the British pike record. Has also caught over 400 twenty pound plus pike! Neville will be selling copies of his book Big Water Pike Fishing on the night at a bargain £15.

Catch Reports
Biggest stillwater pike so far this season is 22lb 3oz pike from an Oxfordshire Lake and caught by Tony Hallatt, successful bait was popped up mackerel and was caught after three trips to the lake along with a 16lb back up fish. Biggest river pike so far this season is 15lb from the river Thames and caught by Mick Woods.

Trophies will be presented at the April meeting for the season’s biggest Stillwater and River caught pike.

Piking legend Eddie Turner, better known as ‘ET’, is our guest speaker at the next meeting on Thursday 25th November. Meeting will be at our usual venue of The Red Lion pub, Eynsham OX29 4HW starting at 7.30pm.

Eddie Turner is author of Mega Pike and Mega Pike The Return and runs Eddie Turner Specialist Pike Tackle.

Few anglers in history have been more successful then Eddie when it comes to the capture of the very biggest pike that swim in our waters. Eddie tends to keep out of the lime light but his talks are always informative with a laugh along the way. He has designed many pike fishing items and methods and will bring along some of his products.
As at May 09 Eddie Turner had caught x2 pike over 40lb, x11 over 35lb, x28 over 30lb and x185 over 20lbs. Simply mind blowing!

Eddie will also have his tackle stand at the meeting, so attendees may want to bring some spending money!!!

Posters have been posted to all regional tackle shops, I would be grateful if you can check that these are being displayed, I have also written to tackle shops asking if they can donate anything for the raffle, like wise if any of you have any odds and sods for the raffle then this along with door fee helps pay for any overheads, trophies and guest speakers.

I am progressing two fish-ins, the first will be in January with Linear Fisheries the likely venue. The second fish-in will be at Blenheim Palace in February, more details on both to follow.
Please let me know if your up for a curry night and I will arrange one.
We are running two trophies this season, one for biggest river pike and one for biggest still water pike.

Catch Reports
Well done to Tony Hallatt who has had a 22lb 3oz pike from an Oxfordshire Lake, successful bait was popped up mackerel and was caught after three trips to the lake along with a 16lb back up fish. Tony will have photos of the fish at the next meeting.
Young Dan Williams who features in the December Pike & Predators magazine with the second part of his bank fishing at Chew article had a couple of jacks from Hardwick Linear a couple of weeks ago.
I am still waiting for my first pike this winter but following Julian Chidgey’s talk I am currently trying a pre-baiting campaign and am currently splitting my sessions between pike and perch.

Last Night

Our thanks to Julian Chidgey who gave a very interesting and informative talk last night on his pike fishing career and his Drennan Cup campaign. It certainly wets the appetite for this winter and underlines the drive and dedication that the man has.

Next up on Thursday 25 November will be piking legend Eddie Turner, when asked what his theme will be he replied "ET - The Movie" so we wait to see! It will be a great night so don't miss it.

In the meantime don't forget to report any decent fish as we are now running trophies for the biggest stillwater pike and biggest river pike.

At our next meeting on Thursday 21st October we welcome the current Drennan Cup holder Julian Chidgey as our guest speaker. The Devon based Korum consultant fishes a number of Oxfordshire venues and will give a talk on specimen piking and his Drennan Cup campaign.

I am particularly looking forwarding to hearing Julian’s thoughts and practices regarding pre-baiting for pike.

Julian is a very successful all rounder with numerous big pike including two 30lb+ specimens as well as tench to over 11lb and carp to over 45lb. Julian puts into practice some very interesting and innovative methods which have helped him become one of the most successful anglers in the country.

It was agreed at our last meeting to run two trophies this season, one for biggest river pike and one for biggest still water pike and these trophies will be purchased during the season. I will start to arrange a couple of social fish-ins over the next 3-4 months, including one on Blenhiem Palace. More details to follow.

We welcome the experienced Steve Younger for our first meeting of the season on Thursday 23 Sept. His talk ‘Exotic fishing and travelling adventures’ is one not to be missed.
The talk will be based on Steve’s exotic fishing & travelling adventures, fishing in places as diverse as the North Norfolk coast to South East Asia, for species such as pike, sharks, snakeheads, tiger fish, sailfish etc. Steve runs Specialist Angling Supplies ( www.sas-tackle.com ), is an angling guide for all types of fishing home and abroad and is also the author of Fenland Zander.

2010 Piking Convention

This years Convention takes place at the new venue of the Kettering Convention Centre, Northants on Saturday 25th of September.

Speakers confirmed so far are: Eric Edwards - Mark Ackerley Julian Chidgey. The centre has a large lake available which will stage Pike Fly Casting Tuition from a Top Pike-Fly casting expert.

Doors open at 9.00am and prices on the door are £10 PAC members and £15 non-members (£5 will be refunded if you join the PAC on the day). Free car parking.

Summer Update

Our first meeting was held on Thursday 29 April 2010 at the Red Lion pub in Eynsham, Oxfordshire. A total of 18 persons attended so it was a good solid start from which the group hope to build.
An excellent and enjoyable talk was given by Mark Barrett and Denis Moules, worthwhile noting they do put a slightly different angle on each of their presentations.

A really good raffle was held and my thanks go to Linear Fisheries, Basil Hopkins, Roy Parsons, J&K Tackle (Bicester) and States Tackle (Witney) for their kind generosity and support.
It was agreed by those present that we would keep the group informal and hold monthly meetings between September and April, on the last Thursday of the month where possible. We will continue to charge £3 on the door for PAC members and £4 non-members and encourage everyone to join the main PAC.

A number of other guest speakers have agreed to give us a talk including Julian Chidgey and Nevs. It is also hoped that some of our group may be willing to share some of their pike & predator fishing experiences. My thanks to the Reading Region who have agreed to give us a spare screen for talks.

A database is currently being produced so that communication via email can be made. If you want to be added to this then please let me have your email address.

We also plan to hold a couple of fish-ins next winter and run a couple of trophies, possibly for the best river and best stillwater pike, these to be voted on by the members at the end of the season.

Welcome to the Oxfordshire & North Wilts PAC Region blog. We were set up in March 2010 to promote pike and pike fishing in our region on behalf of the Pike Anglers Club Of Great Britian.

We plan to hold monthly meetings with guest speakers, fish-in, teach-ins, social events and competitions.

We welcome new members and encourage all attendees to join the PAC.
